I agree with your evaluation of Prius v. Civic. My consumption is ~4.9
l/100 km on the highway, rising to 5.9 in normal city driving. However,
it does not like short distance start-stop driving (moving 1 or 2 km at
a time, like going from shop-to-shop) when it may reach over 7 l/100 km;
there, the Prius would win hands down! I find the Civic is very
gradient-sensitive. I live at an altitude of ~290 m: a 25 km trip
(ordinary mixed roads, partly built up) into Larnaca, at sea level,
takes 4.2 l/100 km, but the round trip takes 5.9, implying that the
return takes 7.6, the difference being due to the gradient. If I have
the electric aircon on, it adds ~0.6-0.7 l/100 km: even the headlights
add on another 0.1 l/100 km. I have calculated that energy recovery
efficiency averages about 50% (electric driving energy at the
wheels/energy charging battery during braking), although it varies over
quite a wide range depending on a number of variables.
