OSP connectors...we have used thousands and thousands..both with
passivated body and goldplated body. And I've seen these MIXED for many
years, and NEVER had a corrosion issue.

However, to be exact, you should not mate goldplated connectors to
passivated steel connectors. Theoretically, the galvanic potential is
0.5 V.

I've a paper with material selection recommendations from a connector
company, can send it offline if you want it.

/Inge

It is OSP Panel feedthru connector made by MAACOM.
Maacom has two options of the housing bushing plating :
1. stainless steel type 303 passivated per ASTM A 380 2. stainless
steel type 303 with gold over nickel plating.

Since option 1 is chipper we would like to purchase it, but our
customer, who supposed to connect his mating connector, has connector
made of stainless steel type 303 with gold over nickel plating.
I hope it is clear now.
Thank you in advance.
Anat

this gives a different image. Seems like risk for galvanic currents.
However, I'm still confused.

A connector with passivated stainless steel 303?? What kind?

And the gold plated connector, what's the body made of? Steel 303?

Are you talking coaxial SMT SMA connectors or like? If that is the case,
you must have steel-to-steel or gold-to-gold.

Thank you for your response.
It is not double plating. I have one connector with passivated
stainless steel 303 and the mating connector is gold plating.
The question is if it can be joined together, in high humidity level,
without creation of corrosion Anat

Anat,

why gold on passivated steel? Cosmetic aspect?
Well, if it's a must, gold over steel is possible.
There are lots of products with that finish, e.g. wrist watches.

Passivation of steel is for protection against corrosion Gold plating is
also for protection against corrosion.
So, you want a double corrosion protection?

Gold is not corrosive in itself and works as a corrosion protection if
the gold is thick and free from pores. If too thin gold is used,
corrosion can start through pores in the gold plating.

So, if you happen to have minor contaminations in the steel AND a porous
gold plating, there is a risk of pore corrosion. The steel surface
roughness is also of importance.

As always, there are some 'it depends'. If you describe the part to be
plated, TN may give you a more precise answer.

Hi,
Is passivated stainless steel 303 can be joined to gold plating, in
high humidity level, without creation of corrosion ?

Regards,
Anat
