Right, Wayne, the sites.
I'm surprised. Parylene C laser ablation is already available as a established process! I see laser with new eyes...aooooouuh!

I think you can do just about any kind of machining/ablation with a laser if you have unlimited time to mess with it. As Ben says, you obviously can't hit "shadowed" areas, so fixtures for changing the angle of the board or laser, or multiple laser heads maight be necessary. But I think Inge is referring to reworking the BGA SITE, not really the BGA, so shadowing isn't a problem. Just need to get the right energy density/timing into the thing you want to remove, and have accurate enough targetting to make sure you don't put the wrong amount of energy at the wrong spot.

Inge,

With parylene, you'll have each individual ball coated. The laser may ablate parylene, but you may have trouble applying the laser everywhere there's coating.

hmmm...let's say you want repair a BGA board with Parylene C, would it be possible to remove the coating locally with ablation laser?

My company uses lasers for putting the balls onto BGA packages in mass production. The equipment is eye wateringly expensive but in some circumstances where the machines are balling the same device 24 hours a day it seems to make economic sense.

I'd agree that for other applications the process wouldn't seem very well suited.

And the throughput for a laser is slow compared to oven mass soldering. Would be interesting to know how many TNetters have a laser soldering equipment...

I don't remember what sequence was optimal, but if you had tens of variations of solder and components, there was a lot of experimenting to find the individual shot ramp-ups. The enthusiasm for laser soldering faded away....this was 15 years ago...at least.
