Do some companies actually print information on the part of the label
that is punched out? That's just completely lacking in common sense. Our
labels don't even cover the spool hole.

Subject: [TN] open letter to solder manufacturers

To all the solder wire manufacturers frequenting Technet I'd like to
discuss the following problems and offer some suggested solutions.

The most common form of wire solder is on a roll. And the most common
form of labeling covers the full end of the roll. Unfortunately the
part of the label that covers the hole is destroyed and product
information is lost when this label is "punched out" when the roll is
placed on a rack or other holding device the goes through the center
hole of the spool.

With the many alloys and flux chemistries it can get difficult to
differentiate one spool from another when they all have the same color
spool.

My recommendations;

Make a label for the spool that already has the hole punched out and all
the pertinent product information is printed on this "donut" shaped
label, then even at some point in the future we could tell just what is
on the spool.

Standardized on a spool color scheme as simple as green for any
lead-free alloy and white for any tin-lead alloy. I realize the
complexity of trying to color code every possible alloy and flux
combination so that is why I offer such a simple color scheme.

Lets agree on some simple standards, embrace them and make everybody's
day a little simpler... at least in identifying just what that
mysterious roll of solder is.

Thanks for taking the time to read this.

Best regards,

Phil Nutting
