We're using SolidWorks and AutoCAD LT here.

SolidWorks is overkill when it comes to cabling and system and block
diagrams.

Much better to use AutoCAD LT. It generates clear pdf files for
everyone to read, embeds into Word docs and is pretty good for ~$800,
although there are deals on eBay.

But SolidWorks is amazing for 3D mechanical stuff.

Best of luck!

Micheal,
Yes we are using Solid Works here too for mech. design, and we have not
used their cabling solution either $$
However in my internet search's for something else related to cabling I
do remember getting a hit for a program that is either was a plug for or
output to Visio to do cable dwg's don't remember cost or how
sophisticated the program was.
Try a search.

Subject: [TN] Cable CAD Tools

I've been tasked with finding a CAD tool to assist in generating cable
drawings.

We'd like something where engineering can specify connector types (part
numbers), make a simple schematic (ex:J1-1 to P1-2) and PRESTO out comes
a drawing. (All CAD tools do this RIGHT? hehe)

(CAD group would finish up the details)

We use Solidworks as a mechincal tool, seen the demo for their cabeling,
but training and licenses are $$$. (Need something easier to use.)

So if anyone can give me some insight to what others are using out
there, I'd appreciate is. As of now, manager is leaning to Visio...(ugh)
