Watch out!
I used to clip out the plastic base of PLCC sockets to get better access
to hand solder the pins, but I found that there was a reliability
problem with one of my applications. The CPU in the socket (32 or 48
pins?) had intermittent operation when the system was vibrated or
whacked. It seems that the CPU was sitting too low in the socket to
provide adequate contact force for a good electro-mechanical connection.
By placing a shim (the same height as the removed plastic) under the
CPU, the contact points were moved up the socket pin (down the CPU pin)
to provide more contact tension, solving the intermittent problems.

You're exactly right Joel. That's the way I've always reworked PLCC
sockets for as long as I can remember...

Subject: [TN] Plastic PLCC socket rework.

If we have to replace one of these it has been a common practice to cut
out the bottom in order to gain easy access to the leads when hand
soldering. It was thought that the bottom was mainly there for pick and
place purposes.

Does anyone do it this way and know if this is industry acceptable
practice
