Not done it for years, but when I did it was always the "plan of record" for
re-working these sockets.

If we have to replace one of these it has been a common practice to cut
out the bottom in order to gain easy access to the leads when hand
soldering. It was thought that the bottom was mainly there for pick and
place purposes. 

Does anyone do it this way and know if this is industry acceptable
practice
