Yes prevention is better than cure. 
The problem with aqueous  cleaning or rinsing can be often not so  much
getting the cleaner/rinse in but getting it out after, capillary traps being
the main cause of concern.

One of the problems with many "no-clean" fluxes is that they sublimate and
re-condense on cooler parts. I've often seen connector issues, such as you
describe. Easy cure: have a mating connector in place during soldering!
