Jon,
Then I would be curious to know if your friend includes total defects
found at all those stations when compiling the DPMO:
1-Visual Inspection
2-X-Ray inspection
3-ICT/ Flying Probe
The frequency or time period to which they measure themselves is also
key (weekly DPMO, bi-weekly or one month period).
A DPMO of 10-15 is achievable at only ICT/FP (taking into account enough
test coverage) but including all stations listed above, this is amazing.
They certainly have a well trained and experienced workforce to achieve
this. This corresponds to 4.3 Sigma or 8.5 ppm (defective part per
million)!!! We're at 3.9 Sigma and I consider it very good. Our
corporation wants 4.5 though.
Regards,
Eric

I don't think they are counting everything.
I can assure that they are and they are quite thorough about it. I
have been hired in the past as an auditor of their process and quality
documentation, as well as a trainer for certain functions in their
organization. The numbers are quite real, not padded, nothing omitted,
possibly even conservative in certain areas.
