Cantagallo,

Coming from a hybrid background, like Ingemar, when I see DBC, I think
of DBC on alumina substrates. I hope that is what you are speaking of as
well.

I don't have any specific references at my finger tips that I can
forward to you, but will see if I can dig anything up.

My thought is that the higher thermal mass of the DBC substrate will
require more time to preheat thoroughly, and you will have to be more
generous with time above liquidus temperature as well, just to get it
there.

I would think this is a great application for vapor phase soldering.
You might scan the web sites of VP equip manufacturers for tech articles
on DBC soldering, if you had not already done so.

Steve

Doesn't that depend on what you use DBC for? See below:

As far as I remember (we've used DBC long ago), DBC is like any PWB
process, except that it's much tougher. With other words, you can solder
even with AuSn, and same way as soldering (brazing)thickfilm on ceramic.

Subject: [TN] Soldering on DBC

Hello Technetters,
I have to look for use of DBC (Direct Bond Copper) substrates for high
reliability applications.
Could anyone give me references of technical articles, books or website
about the soldering (iron and vapor phase) of SMD's and wire connections
with SnPb on DBC ?
What are the main issues we have to survey ?

Thanks in advance,

Best regards,

CANTAGALLO Luigi
