Subject: [SMART] Tin alloys and REACH

Any of you who attended the recent SMART seminar on Directives and
Future Directives - Interpretation and Impact on the Electronics
Industry will have heard Martin Tarr speaking about the REACH
regulation. This is the new requirement for all substances to be
registered, with a detailed toxicological and exposure assessment, with
the EU Chemicals Agency in order for it to be continue to be sold for
each of its uses in the EU. Martin's presentation is here if you are
interested in having a look;
http://www.mtarr.co.uk/resources/070925MT.pdf

ITRI has been working for some time on the data required to register tin
metal under REACH and we are holding an update meeting on 8th November
especially for tin alloy manufacturers and/or importers. If you are a EU
solder manufacturer or importer you are welcome to attend, there is no
charge for the meeting - so please contact me if your company has not
already received an invitation from us and you would like more details.

There are different requirements for EU alloy manufacturers (who are
'users' of tin) than for importers of tin alloys (who will need to
consider full REACH registration of each of the metals in their alloys).

There is also more about REACH on the ITRI website;
http://www.itri.co.uk/bfora/systems/xmlviewer/default.asp?arg=DS_ITRI_PA
RTART_33/_firsttitle.xsl/37

Unfortunately, because of space limitations this particular meeting is
only open to alloy suppliers, rather than any assemblers etc further
down the supply chain.

thanks
Kay Nimmo
