I think the only way Prashant can get close to these criteria is to go
with a used machine - maybe a GSM-1 or something like that... it's
quite a wish list.

good luck!

Hi Prashant!

It sounds like your expectations may be a bit unrealistic. You can get
a lower priced base cost machine, but all of the stuff you really want
for prototyping is mostly what makes the more expensive machines more
expensive!

Prototypes want:

-Fast programming/easy interface
-Part value confirmation for passives
-Smallest possible odd shaped parts
-Perfect pattern recognition
-Fast feeder setup and load/unload
-Support for multiple feeder formats: T&R, stick, tray, or mini-tray

OK, so you are probably willing to take a big hit on throughput, so that
could drop the price of the machine a small amount, but all of the other
stuff requires precision machining, lots of processing power and a good
control system.

We run a cheap system here. The machine has good placement accuracy,
fair pattern recognition, and clunky but manageable software. It's a
MannCorp and is about 5 years old. Required a lot of re-engineering to
do 0201 parts (which MannCorp provided a lot of support for). Feeders
are cheap and fairly maintenance intensive--requiring lots of tweaks
while running jobs and they take a while to load/unload, particularly if
you need to conserve parts as is often the case with small prototype
runs. All things considered, I think it probably was the best choice
for us at the time.

Subject: [TN] SMT machine recommendation

Hi,

We are planning to purchase a SMT pick and place machine for proto
builds and NPI runs. We are looking for something in range of low to
mid volume build (max may be 1000 nos. build).

The important criteria for selection is ---

  1. Base cost ---- range of 30,000 USD to 50,000 USD
  2. Should be able to place chip components, odd shape parts, QFPs,
BGAs.
  3. Since we plan to buy one machine, so should be able to have high
numbers of feeders which can be loaded in.

Appreciate your valuable feedback and recommendations .

  Rgds
  Prashant
