Good morning Steve,
I would suggest that you contact the connector manufacturer first. Most
press fit connectors rely on pressing the connector flat against the
board. If they are not seated properly they can rock and back out of
the hole. Also, there are some fairly tight specs about the hole sizes,
plating thickness, plating material hardness, and how thick the PCB
needs to be for the leads to collapse and cut into the hole plating a
small amount in the correct area of the contact. The specs from
manufacturers on the hole plating and pad type is very important. I
tried to modify the way a board was built from the recommendations and
it was a complete failure. We had back-drilled some high-speed signal
lines. This made the effective board thickness too thin, so part of the
collapsible section of the pins were below the hole lip (inside the PCB
and not visible), and the connectors would not stay on the boards. A
few insertions and you had the board in one hand and the connector in
the other.
Regards,
Kim Haynes

Subject: [TN] Installing Press-fit Connectors AFTER Conformal Coating?

Good Morning All!

We're about to build some assemblies for a customer that wants us to
install press-fit connectors after conformal coating. BTW, it's going to
be an acrylic coating.

This is something new for me. Is this pretty common? Is there anything I
should be careful of when doing this?

Thanks!

Steve Gregory
