But now that I think about it, why green? RoHS is much harder on the
environment. Why propagate the myth? Oh, I get it.

Green is the color of money.

Perhaps silver is a better color for lead-free solder labels.

Its the color of tin whiskers. ;-)

FYI only, AIM utilizes green spools exclusively for lead-free solders.

Genny,

Wouldn't it be nice if all solder manufacturers could agree on a spool
color or maybe the IPC could set a standard.

The green spool seems like an advantage when wanting to associate it
with leadfree solder wire. However, if you ever buy Alpha brand SnPb
solder, you'll notice that the Alpha uses a green spool for that as
well. The green does not mean leadfree for Alpha.
This just caused a contamination issue on about 20 leadfree boards for
us. A CM hand-soldered connectors with SnPb solder, because the
assembler thought it was leadfree due to the green spool.

The different color reel is a huge advantage. I don't understand why
other vendors can't see this advantage. It would be great if there were
different colors for OA, RA, RMA, no-clean, tin/lead and lead-free. Now
that would make it much easier to tell the differences when you have six
different rolls of solder on your bench. Now if I could just figure out
how to make a profit from that idea. Then I'd be able to buy a large
cup of coffee.

We tried many no-clean rosin-free core and lead-free alloy (SAC305 or
387)
wires, no serious preference for any among the operators in terms of
performance (but unanimous that they were harder to use than leaded
wires), but they liked the Alpha product best because it was on a green
plastic reel and thus easily distinguished from any Sn63Pb37 wire reels
still in use for repairs of older product. This was as good a reason as
any so we went with Alpha FT2002 SAC305. Whatever you choose, make sure
your supplier provides a licence paid version if you use a patented
alloy though
