You are correct. 50% is the maximum and if components are to close to
allow 50% plus the minimum electrical clearance then you have to go with
what the minimum electrical clearance will allow. I hope that came out
right.

Subject: [TN] IPC 610 Side Overhang

Greetings,

Can someone provide clarification on the 50% side overhang rule in 610?
My colleagues interpret this to mean that in order to meet class 2,
component spacing must allow for this 50% overhang for every component.
This means that spacing between components must be at least the width of
the component, to allow for the 50% overhang.

I read note 1 to state that 50% is the maximum allowable - that if
components are spaced closer than this, the minimum electrical spacing
is the maximum allowable. They read note 1 to state that any components
closer than 50% of the width is a violation of IPC 610.

Who's right and who's wrong??

Hope this made sense to everyone!

Thanks,

Jason
