I have used ENIG for years on internet switch backplanes in medium volumes
without issues.

While mailing the link though, I also have a question on the suitability of
silver as a finish for backplanes. I am concerned about degradation of the
finish in an environment with high levels of air pollution.

Subject: [TN] Backplane PCB surface finish

Dear Technetters,
Are there some distinct set of considerations that apply only to backplane
PCBs? A question was raised regarding the suitability of ENIG finish for
backplane assemblies. We are using ENIG for other PCBs and so far, have not
run into issues that can be traced back to the ENIG finish. What are some
unique considerations that must be taken into account when specifying a
finish for a backplane assembly?

Thanks in advance,
Amol
