Hi Blair!

Got your pictures up. They're here:

http://stevezeva.homestead.com/files/Blairs_Switch_2.jpg

In looking at your assembly, it looks like you have some pretty tall components on the top, and you have the tanatlum at C1 and the ceramic cap at C6 that are in the footprint of the switch which makes things kind of challenging for selective soldering. That said, it probably still can be done.

Do you have an Airvac PCBRM? They might be able to come up with a custom nozzle that could do the job. Here's a link:

I've had a few custom nozzles made and they do a good job. If you don't have a PCBRM, they can be found used for a decent price...

I'll see if I can get a picture or two over to Steve's wall. Perhaps you can take a look at it and see if you think a selective soldering fixture would work.

Why not use selective soldering?

Subject: [TN] Autofeed Soldering Irons

We have a new product in development that will have a rotary switch mounted on the solder side of the PCBA, thus having to be soldered from the component side, necessitating hand soldering. The switch has two row of 6 through hole contacts at standard .100 spacing.

In the past we looked into using soldering irons with auto-feed solder, but didn't get very far as they would get gummed up with flux and would have feed problems, but are now thinking of trying these again.

Has anybody out in TechNet land used autofeed soldering irons? What one work well, or should be avoided?

How about low cost soldering robots? Anything reasonably priced?

If you would prefer to reply off the list, please feel free to do so.

Thanks,

Blair
