We are seeing a rash of pin damage on PLCC sockets. When the IC is
inserted the contact is actually bent in half and no longer visible from
the top of the socket. We suspect that the change over to RoHS compliant
parts is a contributing factor. The friction between the two Matte tin
parts is greater then tin/lead. The manufacturer suggested trying to
obtain the ICs with bright tin (good luck with that) but then there is the
big concern about tin whiskers. I was wondering if anyone is seeing the
same conditions and if so are there any suggestions to minimize the
problem. Also the supplier is one of the largest connector manufactures
and they bought up the majority of other electronic component companies.
