To monitor the head temperature of my nitro burning r/c engines, I use a
twenty five dollar instrument. A great little device if you just need
something quick and cheap versus something expensive that's calibrated and
traceable for ISO purposes:

Works great for most metals, and is continuous reading. Tells me if I have
my air/fuel mixture set right after a good run as the fuel also acts as a
coolant with the tiny engines. It's emissivity value can be changed to
