In the contract or PO put that your company specs take precedence over
the IPC ones.

Comment, if in our case we have a large contract that states in the
Quality Assurance section that states Soldering shall be in accordance
with ANSI/J-Std 001 Class 3. Repair, rework and modification shall be in
accordance with IPC-7711 and 7721 Class 3. Acceptability of solder joint
shall be per IPC-A-610 Class 3 and ANSI/J-Std-001 Class 3. In the event
of a conflict between IPC-A-610 and ANSI/J-Std 001, the ANSI/J-Std-001
shall prevail.

So how can we vary or not abide? Jon

Subject: Re: [TN] Fw: question regarding IPC standard

IPC 610 is a standard, but some companies may have variences from that

standard, that is their choice. Nothing in the 610 states that a mfgr

must abideth by said standard or shall suffereth the dire penalties if

they leave the straight and narrow path. There may be some mfg'g

concerns that are not directly addressed by 610 that need to be clearly

stated in an assembly document or standard, such as the addition of

certain special hardware or adhesives (7.3.2 good section, but isn't

clear enough for our end products).

But an order of precedence should be clearly stated and signed off by

all concerned parties. Somebody has to make the call.

My personal preference, FWIW, is:

1) <company name> Manufacturing Standards

2) CM Manufacturing Standards

3) IPC standards

4) Component manufacturer guideline(s)

5) Other applicable industry standards

May also want to refer to A-610, section 1.4.2, "Acceptance Criteria."

Please note A-610 is number 3 in a list of 4 items.

BRgds,

Roger

Subject: [TN] Fw: question regarding IPC standard

Hi all,

A question came up here yesterday regarding what has precedence in

regard to quality issues. Some say IPC 610 would over company criteria

and some visa versa. The question came up noting that it is a standard

and cannot be changed. Others said it is that companies can vary from

the standard if they choose. Help.. who is right here??

Thanks, Bob
