If the accident had been in England, I think the english black humor had
overridden the tragic, and Brian's joke had maybe made many laugh. It
doesn't work with americans, different kind of humor. Coal miners...they
have been a marvellous and important group of professionals for the
western development. I had some english relatives who worked in coal
mines long ago. Their stories told me what a hard life they had. As a
boy, I nearly wept when I heard about the poor ponnies, that worked hard
hundreds feet below the surface, and never saw daylight, and finally
died down there, never saw sun and grass. And all thousands of coal
miners who have lost their life in the pit. And still do, obviously. The
industrial revolution couldn't take place without the coal miners. Great
men, tough guys!

Lord knows I like a good off-colored joke as much as anybody, and I
don't expect that you follow the news in the US much because you live in
Cyprus, but a joke about coal miners couldn't have been more ill timed.

You see, because many of us in the US have been closely following the
fate of six coal miners who have been trapped in a mine collapse in a
Utah coal mine since the 6th of August, and it was only yesterday
evening that three miners were killed trying to rescue the six who are
still trapped. It looks like they're going to call off any further
rescue attempts of the six.

My thoughts and prayers go out to the family and friends of those who
have been affected by this tragedy...

A couple attending an art exhibition at the National gallery was staring
at a portrait that had them completely confused. The painting depicted
three very black and totally naked men sitting on a park bench. Two of
the figures had black weenies, but the one in the middle had a pink
weenie.

The curator of the gallery realized that they were having trouble
interpreting the painting and offered his assistance. He went on for
nearly half an hour explaining how it depicted the sexual emasculation
of African Americans in a predominately white, patriarchal society...'In
fact,' he pointed out, 'some serious critics believe that the pink
weenie also reflects the cultural and sociological oppression
experienced by gay men in contemporary society.'

After the curator left, a young man in a Kentucky T-shirt approached the
couple and said, 'Would you like to know what the painting is really
about? 'Now why would you claim to be more of an expert than the curator
of the gallery?' asked the couple.

'Because I'm the guy who painted it,' he replied. 'In fact, there are no
African Americans depicted at all. They're just three Kentucky coal
miners, and the guy in the middle went home for lunch.
