I had a friend translate and he said some experts attributed the failure
to the Lead-free Platinum, which due to the cyclic heating became
brittle.

Interesting thread and links on Microsofts billion$+ issue with X-box
failures attributed by some to joint failure due to thermal cycling see
contents and links.

Subject: Re: [LF] Big lead-free bill for Microsoft ?

Hello,

I'll try to translate - hope my english will be good enogh - the parts
of
the article which are most interesting with respect to lead-free:

------------------------------------------------------------------------
----
--------------------------------------------------------------

While Microsoft gives no official information whether the not acceptable
high failure rates of Xbox360 depend on basic failures of the hardware
design or on untidy production. Meanwhile the people at Redmond work on
a
complete redesign. This was published by Dean Takahashi, author of the
book
"Opening the Xbox", in an article published by the San Jose Mercury
News.

(... some informations an the inside graphic chip design...)

The smaller size of the chip will not only lead to cheaper production
but as
well to lower current consumption. This will improve the temperature
level
inside the housing and lower the noise level of the fan. Most of all the
lower heat level shall reduce the number of failures of "Red Ring of
Death"
(PROD). At the moment Microsoft manages this by mounting an additional
cooling element, connected by a heatpipe to the graphic-chip-heatsink.
Experts suppose that the leadfree solder used on the board becomes
brittle
due to the high number of temperature changes.

(... information on commercial aspects....)

A few days ago Microsoft announces to expand the warranty period to
three
years for failures of the PROD-type ... Customers who had to pay for
repair
of the PROD-failures will get their money back from Microsoft.
Specialists
suppose that about one of three Xbox360 early or late will get that
PROD-failure.

------------------------------------------------------------------------
----
----------------------------------------------------------------
That was roughly the contents of the mentioned link. At the bottom of
that
article there is an other link which leads to some more details. I'll
try to
catch the most interesting points of that:

------------------------------------------------------------------------
----
----------------------------------------------------------------
... dealers as well as customers have complained about the high failure
rate
.... Microsoft will save 1.05 to 1.15 billion dollars for the warranty
program. ..... The failure rate of the Xbox360 at the start of delivery
in
November 2005 was at about 50%... in between Microsoft has delivered
about
10 Million of Xbox360 worldwide. .... The warranty program is valid not
only
fo the US but as well all over the world.
