I agree with Bev's first statement..
 
If you are going to destruct the part anyway, then stripping the gold and  
examining the nickel surface would be the easiest and most effective way to make 
 your determination.
 
Potassium Thiocyanate will not strip gold, for that you will need potassium  
cyanide. 
There are specific formulations to do this safely.
