Ok, but I thought you were measuring placement, not the amount of
tombstoning. Surely you can use them for that purpose. You simply put
double sided clear tape down over the pattern to determine how far off
target the placements are. I use an X-ray that has measurement
capability to do this. For example, on the VJ2500 X-ray machine I tell
the X-ray that from the center of a given via to the center of the next
via is a known distance of .050". The machine calibrates itself based on
that information. It can then measure the distance between the center of
the 0201 pads to the center of the placed part and tell you the
variation (deviation from the mean) of all of your placed parts.
Cumulative data will then establish the CpK of the placer.
Most good X-ray machines have the capability for performing this type of
measurement. You can use some other measuring tool as well. I just find
the X-ray an easy and extremely accurate inspection tool for measuring
this type of variation.

Basically landpatterns too widely spaced to avoid tombstoning.

Just curious, why did you find the Practical and Topline pwbs
unsatisfactory?

Subject: [TN] SMT placement test PCB

Dear colleagues,

I am pondering the necessity of having a custom PCB designed, PCB that
would serve for periodical testing of the placement of our machines. We
have Fuji CP6 and IP3, just FYI as I don't think the board should be
speciffic to a machine in particular.

I am wondering if any of you felt the need of having a special PCB to
perform this, or you find the glass board for IP and the regular Fuji
test board sufficient?

I have checked the available boards from Practical and Topline and find
them unsatisfactory when it gets to 0402 and 0201 landpatterns.

If you would order a special PCB, how would you use it? What components
should it be there?

Thanks,

Ioan
