The old phrase "buyer beware" comes to mind...
If the customer did NOT specify "no logo" on their PO, then you have every
right to ask them to eat the product. Now, that might not sit well with the
customer, so a little finesse might be in order here. However, you have a
common process of placing logo, UL E file number, UL 94 flammability rating,
etc. on each board. In your initial conversations with the customer was this
mentioned or at least discussed with the customer? It was at that time that
this should have been decided. It's the old ISO 9001:2000 "meet customer
expectations - or change them up front" philosophy.

Bottom line: If the customer's PO did not specifically state that you leave
off your logo, UL flammability rating, etc. then you would follow your
normal practice to add them for traceability. I would think that in the long
run (with traceability being high on everyone's list these days), the
customer would expect this type of info to be added. As long as you don't
splash your company name across the board so there might be a mix up in
whose product it eventually is... yours or theirs.

I think your customer just bought those 5 lots of boards. You might offer a
reduced cost for them, but make sure you get the customer's expectations
nailed down before the product is in their hands.

Subject: [TN] Vendor Markings

I'm interested in opinions regarding Vendor Markings. If a fabrication
drawing is silent regarding vendor markings, is it acceptable to apply the
fabricators UL logo? We have a customer that is angry we applied our logo.
However, we feel we need to apply our logo for our own traceability and
ability to do failure analysis should the boards ever be in question.

We have had several occasions where our customers return boards we didn't
build. It obviously is easy when we can show them the logo is not ours, but
it gets difficult when there are no logos on the board.

They'd like us to rebuild 5 lots of boards due to not asking them if it was
acceptable to apply our vendor id.

Should the fabricator be responsible for requesting approval for vendor
markings on every job, or should the board buyer be responsible for stating
no vendor markings allowed?

Your input is appreciated.
