My experience is only peripheral to PCB assembly and my former employer who  manufactured and sold conformal coatings was a one man show, but I was completely blind sided when no clean fluxes were first introduced.
   
  Suddenly customers were calling up with problems related to "no clean" fluxes. I never knew who said "no clean" fluxes didn't require cleaning. In some instances they did cause problems with conformal coating.
   
  Industry was quick to jump on something easier to use.
   
  My employer ran tests for several months and ultimately came out with their own version of "no clean"flux.
