I agree that a good design in no more expensive than a bad design and in
fact a good design should be much less expensive. However, you need to
define what you mean by expense. If you're talking the overall cost
which includes returned bad product and warranty repair then what you
say is true. The problem I see in the design community is that there
are fewer designs allocated to design, fewer design reviews by cross
functional team, a lack of accountability, and an emphasis by management
to minimum reduce the design cycle, get to market quicker, and reduce
the up front cost (design, materials, and assembly). Good designs are a
tall order when emphasis is put on the up front expenses.
