Interesting point Inge I am taking it that the MTBF is calculated? I wonder
what they used for the solder joint model - probably nothing? Just the same
old numbers from the component tables they have been using for the last 30
years?

Joe,
you used to be a balanced man. What do you think of the MTBF of respective
laptops? There are millions sold. If LF and SJ were problems, I'm sure you'd
find that in some of the many magazines that test and have all sorts of
opinions about computers. In fact, I have not seen any such flags. As far as
I have heard about CDs, most frequent causes for not running are software
issues.

MTBF for desktops is described by Seagate:
http://www.digit-life.com/articles/storagereliability/

and Toshiba presents MTBF for their laptop CD drives as 60,000 POH. That
ain't bad, is it? And it's LEADFREE!

Thanks for sharing your thoughts Dave

As I noted in my opening words, I will most likely never know what the cause
was. My data poimnt count is only one but is was not a good experience and I
would not characterize my comments as "hysterical". We can go there should
the data points mount but I don't think it will be necessary until then...
;-)

I did get a full refund and an appology, so there is something to take
pleasure in.

Kind regards,
Joe

I would suggest that it belies your undoubted professional expertise to make
the assumption that this failure has anything to do with RoHS-compliance or
lead-free. Frankly, it smacks of hysteria. Surely you can think of at least
a dozen other potential failure modes, all equally likely? Let's see some
evidence in this case before you throw your toys out of the playpen.
