Hi Wayne,
You should not "feel guilty about these ridiculous units, as a US citizen or 
otherwise."
There are actually rather logical reasons (more than one) for these "
ridiculous" "ounces per square foot"
(1) copper is sold by weight, it does not matter whether you use ounces or 
kilograms;
(2) unlike rolled copper, plated copper does not have a fixed density value—
thus, there cannot be a direct conversion of "ounces per square foot" into mils 
ot kg/sq. meter into mm;
(3) that has not stopped people from doing that, but they are ignoring a 
technical fact—which is really 'ridiculous.'
(4) there is no real solution to this that would make everybody happy;
(5) the interesting thing is that the laminators buy the ED foil by weight 
and sell it to you by area—guess what, all the laminated foil you buy is on the 
low thickness side of the spec.
