I think that is the best approach. 

Tinning the leads only adds tin/lead to the gold. Don't you then have to
remove most of the tin/lead/gold mixture, and repeat?

Better to not get gold on them in the first place.

Rather than have to go through all that, I'm going to try and get the
connectors from Samtec with tin/lead on the leads and hope I don't have
the same problems as Scott Lefebvre when he went through this drill... 

You see we are to build a series of three assemblies that use these
connectors. We're supposed to build 175 sets of these assemblies per
month. There are five connectors used between the three assemblies; two
160-pin connectors, two 80-pin connectors, and one 40-pin connector. So
that's 875 connectors a month! 

I'd rather start with a connector that I can solder to a board without
doing anything to it rather than have to jump through all those hoops.
No need to put labor into something when you don't have to, right?
