  Possibly the reason for the 'blessing' on Au finishes is similar to my experience. One of our customers' guidance document listed NiPdAu as the only RoHS component termination finish that had no qualifications/reservations/extra testing requirements associated with it. Other finishes had whisker testing, etc, required for various conditions of use. NiPdAu was automatically approved for any component, any termination type. If only it were more commonly available, without paying a premium...
