Knowledge management seems to be an issue in many companies, with the new
crop of engineers having to re-learn the lessons of old over and over.
Back when EMPF was in Indianapolis, they used to offer a two week "boot
camp" on the fundamentals of manufacturing. I wrote the module for the
cleanliness and residues part and got to occasionally be a guest "drill
instructor". I don't know if ACI still offers that course. Guy?
What Bill suggests is being addressed to some extent. IPC is working on a
handbook (820) which is essentially "The Manufacturing Bible", pulling
together as much instructional material as possible to support J-STD-001,
A-610 and other documents. That effort is being led by Bryan James,
Rockwell, and Sharon Ventress, Army Missle Command. I have been working
on the cleaning sections together with Bev Christian and Graham Naisbitt,
among others, and I think it goes a long way towards educating people on
critical points.
Now, if we just had time to read the darn thing.

Re: [TN] Flux residue, burnt flux
Doug highlights a very key problem in our industry-- the fundamental lack
of
chemistry education in the typical curriculum of any electronics person in
design or on the production line. Thus it is often easy for such folks to
have
problems with incompatible materials and residues during production.
Like it or not, most of the chemists in the industry are found in the labs
and tech service groups of the suppliers, with the materials lab folks
after
that.
Should IPC publish a preferred or minimum training curriculum for people
considering entering the design or production phases of the industry? I
think we
should- it could certainly reduce chemical waste and disposal costs for
the
industry in these times of huge pressures on our manufacturing cost
structure.
Perhaps others would like to consider/debate this point, resulting in
some
ideas to put before TAEC.
