Sorry, Phil, but it depends.
If you have a pick/place machine that has the proper nozzles for MELF
cylinders and can pick/place the particular MELF size you wish to use,
then go for the cost savings.
I do not know if there are reliability issues associated with MELFs. If
there were, that would be a factor in my decision as well.
You can purchase dummy MELFs from Topline or Practical Components to
test your process capability. You also need to consider the quantities
you will use, and the packaging (tape/reel) issues.
I guess in order to realize a true cost savings, some work is required.

Good afternoon,

I recall hearing in my travels that the MELF component style for SMT was
not preferred due to mounting issues.  It looks like some of the MELF
parts are less expensive than their chip cousins.  I know "it depends",
but should I go for the price or ease of mounting?
