Chris:

The automotive industry created the IMDS/GADSL lists after struggling with
the same approach to compliance that the multinational electronics companies
have taken. There have been attempts to get the bug multi-national
electronics corps to enter into GADSL or a like system, but to date I do not
think it has been successful. Can anyone comment further?

I like the idea - don't the automotive industry already have a material
database to achieve a similar result. Surely they will need to be adding
electronics to the database ...............

Chris

During the CFC phaseout days, a number of the major electronics
companies*
got together to compare compatibility test plans. When all the plans
were on
the table, they found they were all testing the same materials! The
next step
was to split up the work, do the testing and prepare a unified report
that was
 available to the industry.
The 1000 page report is still around in book or disk (MATCOMPAT(TM)
format--
provided you know who to ask. Perhaps if the industry got behind such a

format/data package, strongly backed by leading electronics groups such
as IPC,
and said to the world 'this is what we are going to do, take it or
leave it'.
Unified compliance where one company couldn't be played against another
may
dampen the REACH of the regulators...

*AT&T, Boeing, TI, Delco, Hamiliton Standard were among the companies,
as I
recall. If anyone else participated, pls add them to the list.
