Cop-out! In the rush to get things done we make it harder for the folks down
line to do their job... Many still don't have the AOI option (or don't trust
it if they have it). This is a conscious decision made at the time of board
design (more than not without human intervention) that affects everything
through inspection, test, troubleshooting and just about every other
function in a manufacturing facility. It isn't a "nice" thing to have. It's
a reflection on what happens to the assemblies down the road - not in a
design center.

Should be included in all DFM processes as it is not yet as "obsolete" as we
would like to think it is...

Okay, I'll admit I have a rather myopic view of this. But it does impact
folks downstream, and designers have to understand that it does.

Subject: Re: [TN] Component Orientation Survey

With the advent of using AOI, CAD/CAM and surface mount parts, the need
for having singular orientation on a PCB falls in the "nice to have"
category.

With the rush and board density, seemingly everywhere, there isn't enough
time to take time to orient everything the same way.

[TN] Component Orientation Survey

When you design boards, do you:
-lay out similar polar components oriented in the same direction for
ease of manufacture regardless of the shortest routing
or
-lay out each component oriented in the best position for routing
regardless of the orientation of other similar parts?

We have a difference of opinion as to which is more prevalent practice.
