Yep! as my colleague Chris explains more fully.

Please keep in mind that when publishing a solder chart for use by anyone
needing information on solders (as opposed to other joining methods ) not
every one solders just PCB assemblies - where unlike elsewhere - very thin
sub-micron protective gold coatings are a norm. So in the context of all the
alloys in the chart and all the things that could be soldered, a general
rule not to pick out a high tin content alloy for use on gold is good.

Regards

Mike

Happy Friday Jim! This is only a guess but one possible reason for such a
recommendation is the potential to have solder joint integrity degradation
due to gold embrittlement. A high tin content solder alloy and gold surface
finishes do not necessarily mean a gold embrittlement situation but it
would be on aspect of a solder process that would need to be kept in mind.

Technetters:

I happened to come across a solder chart from the Indium Corporation and
noticed that they do not recommend using Sn96 solder on gold-plated
surfaces. Can anyone elaborate on this?
