James, Indium Corporation does not recommend using a high Sn alloy, such as
Sn96, with gold plating due to the brittle Au/Sn intermetallics that could
form and cause reliability issues. However it depends on the thickness of
the gold layer. Typically if you have 10-15 micro-inches of gold the gold
will act as a sacrificial layer. This gold layer will protect the nickel
from oxidation and will dissolve into the solder joint and you will actually
be soldering to the nickel or underlying metallization. If you have 40-50
micro-inches, or more, gold you are actually soldering directly to the gold
instead of the underlying metallization. The Sn will scavenge the gold and
will form brittle Au/Sn intermetallics. I believe the industry is agreeing
that 3% gold by weight, in a joint, is an acceptable amount of gold that
will not cause any brittle Au/Sn intermetallic formation. The major concern
here is long term reliability.

Go to the chart and see alloy 96.5Sn 3.5Ag

Good morning Jim,

Do you have an URL for this CHART that we can look at?

For me Sn96 and gold works like a hose.
