When you "soften" water, you replace the water hardness (principally Calcium carbonate, and bicarbonate) with Sodium Chloride (table salt).   And whereas Sodium is not welcome, chloride may be the real problem in long term reliability, as it accelerates corrosion badly.
   
  From a reliability point of view, hard tap water is probably preferable to soft water!
