Doug,

Whenever I run into a situation where a designer has caused a problem, I
go get the guy and drag him out to the floor and let him see the fruits of
his labor. We have a good relationship.

When a situation arises that seems to spell disaster our designers are
very good at calling us and giving us a "heads up". Most of the time
though, we in manufacturing,, have to choose between the lesser of two
evils because of some design constraint. At least we get to pick which
"hard" way we will use.

Since we are primarily an OEM, I have issued to our designers a minimum
requirements list that spells out what we need to run smoothly in the
shop. The consequence of not following the requirements list results in
longer lead times through the shop. So our guys are pretty good at giving
us what we need.

Re: [TN] Component Orientation Survey

Having spent much of my career in the manufacturing realm, I have long
maintained that if designers had to build the first five units they
designed, our products would become much better, much faster.

"The
designs of today demand throwing away the constraints of the past."
because the designer in the past have to make the prototype by themself...
get the today's designer to do the solder touch up rework on their
non-constraints design will fix it once for all...

We gave the dream of orthogonal placement up a long time ago. The
designs of today demand throwing away the constraints of the past.
Listening to all the whining from our EMS providers has caused me to
reflect on that decision.

When you design boards, do you:
-lay out similar polar components oriented in the same direction for
ease of manufacture regardless of the shortest routing
or
-lay out each component oriented in the best position for routing
regardless of the orientation of other similar parts?

We have a difference of opinion as to which is more prevalent practice.
