Forced to agree with Dewey. With advent of LTSS ideology (Lighter,
Thinner, Shorter, Smaller), have to do what makes everything fit and
function to spec. Think marketing types and corporate wizards care about
everything oriented same way on board?
Used to be a tech-type late 70s, early 80s, so I know what it's like to
build a board. If I can orient comps the same way, I will, but fit,
form, and function come first. Only way I can put that 5 pounds into
inexpensive 10 pound bag.

It is not just the designers fault. Functional integrity drives
placement. Placement impacts routing. Routing dictates layer count.
Layer count increases cost and thickness. Thickness increases aspect
ratio. Higher aspect ratios decreases reliability. Decreased reliability
increases cost. And it starts all over. Since I have final say it's my
fault that we no longer have the luxury of a paint by number placement
strategy.

We gave the dream of orthogonal placement up a long time ago. The
designs of today demand throwing away the constraints of the past.
Listening to all the whining from our EMS providers has caused me to
reflect on that decision.

-lay out similar polar components oriented in the same direction for
ease of manufacture regardless of the shortest routing or -lay out each
component oriented in the best position for routing regardless of the
orientation of other similar parts?
We have a difference of opinion as to which is more prevalent practice.
