This depends on the severity of the operating conditions. For telecomm 1206's
were the upper limit—1810's gave premature failures on FR-4.
Now this can be overcome by eliminating the filets t[his also eliminates the
shrinkage induced CC fractures] and put them on "solder balls/petestals," as I
suggested in Engelmaier, W., “Lead-Free (LF) Wave-Soldering: Can (Should) It
Be Eliminated,” Global SMT & Packaging, Vol. 5, No. 9, October 2005, pp.
46-50.
