IPC是在1957年由6家PCB制造商发起成立的非赢利性专为PCB制造公司服务的组织. 全称为 INSTITUTE FOR PRINTED CIRCUIT, 缩写为IPC.
后来其会员公司不断增加, 并不仅限于PCB, 曾经改名为" 电子电路互连与封装协会" , 完全屏弃了IPC三个字母, 使得业界一时弄不清楚这家" 电子电路互连与封装协会" 是谁. 那时的品牌意识还不是很强烈. 一阵子当用到" 电子电路互连与封装协会" 时都需要补充一下, 就是以前的IPC. 后来IPC的会员成分越来越广泛. 目前已经包含PCB/EMS制造性企业, OEM原始设备制造商, ODM原始设计制造商, 还有咨询服务公司, 其他行业协会, PCB/EMS/设备和材料供应商, 等等. 再次更名为IPC电子工业连接协会. 这里的IPC已经没有任何实际的含义, 而是一个LOGO.

以前IPC是 印刷电路协会（ Institute  for Printed Circuits）经过多年的发展现在已经改名为（ International Association for the printed circuit and electronics assembly industries）.印制电子电路和电子互联行业协会。人们习惯用IPC来表示。
