As a production material this stuff would have too many question marks to
make the risk reward ratio worth doing anything other than disposal,
(although the idea for a tip tinner seems worthy.)
Don't put solder paste in a wave solder pot, the 50% by volume of organics
and volatiles will gas off with an astonishing amount of fume, leaving a
dismaying mess of spent resin and molten plastic in your pot. For these
reasons the residual value of old paste is low but there is usually still
some. What do you do with the spent and sued paste you routinely generate?
You can add it to that. Given enough the value is usually enough to cover
the cost of reclaim, depending on where you are I suppose. Your current
paste supplier should be able to advise you.

Genny,

Do not try to dump the paste into a hot solder pot like a wave solder or
tinning pot. There will be smoke and snap, crackle and pop all over the
place.

If you really think you need to make some use out of expired paste. I have
had good luck with an empty tinning pot (1 lb size) and bring the temp up
slowly to burn off the volatile slowly. Make sure you have plenty of
ventilation..

Of course just properly disposing the material is the easiest.

[TN] What to do with expired solder paste?

Was sorting through the fridge in the stockroom at work...pushed aside a
couple of sandwiches and yogurts (the stockroom people keep their
lunches in there...) and came across a box with 9kg(18 jars) of solder
paste expired in mid 2004 - a brand we don't use any more. Standard
63/37 no-clean.

What would you do with it? Never even been opened.

Genny.
