It's funny you should bring up expiration dates on soldering materials,
I'm going through the same drill today with wire solder.

It's funny how different manufacturers put different shelf life dates on
their wire solder. I know that different flux types or alloys may come
into play when determining the shelf life, but it just doesn't make
sense to me.

For instance:

AMTECH NC-61 No-Clean wire solder, shelf life 12-months from date of
manufacture.

KESTER 44 Activated Rosin Cored solder, shelf life for alloys containing
>70% lead, the shelf life is two years from the date of manufacture.
Other alloys have a shelf life of three years.

MULTICORE 366 Flux, HMP, SN/PB/AG, shelf life minimum 5-years from date
of receipt (this according to a phone call I made this morning).

I'm getting ready to throw away about 30-rolls of solder...actually, I'm
going see if anybody here at work needs a roll or two first. But deep
down inside I know this solder is absolutely fine. Rules is rules
however...

It seems to me you need to bring your storage and handling procedures
out of cold storage. Send the paste to Steve.

Subject: [TN] What to do with expired solder paste?

Was sorting through the fridge in the stockroom at work...pushed aside a
couple of sandwiches and yogurts (the stockroom people keep their
lunches in there...) and came across a box with 9kg(18 jars) of solder
paste expired in mid 2004 - a brand we don't use any more. Standard
63/37 no-clean.

What would you do with it? Never even been opened.

Genny.
