Thanks for all your replies - on and off Forum - they were most helpful
(again, as expected!).
It would appear that the supplier is sub-contracting the welding to a third
party, here we go into another can of worms.............!

Hi Pat,
TIG (Tungsten Inert Gas) welding is not covered in the WHMA-A-602. I did a
lot of this type of welding in my younger days. It is a lot like soldering
but you use a larger wire and a lot more heat.
I don't know of any IPC Standard that covers this type of welding.

Hi Pat!
I went through the standard I have here just to be sure I wasn't missing
anything, and I couldn't find anything that addresses TIG welding. You
are right, the only thing I could find about any sort of welding was
ultrasonic welding. I also looked at the section that addresses
connector damage and there wasn't anything.

Hi Technetters,
can you help? we have a supplier who makes cable harnesses for us, these
harnesses have a s/steel elbow at either end which are TIG welded. The
supplier says they weld them in accordance with WHMA-A-620, from the
information I can gather at the IPC website, this document appears to be
for cable fabrication only i.e. crimping/soldering/assembly although
Chapter 7 does cover ultrasonic welding.
Does the standard also cover TIG?
any advice - as always - would be gratefully appreciated,
