I don't know if there is a standard (I doubt it), but one thing that HAS
to be included in any metric is "number of times the schematic changed
after the job started." We are lucky enough that all changes have to be
submitted thru our PLM software so we can extract this data. Not fair
having us held to our quotes if the engineer can submit different
schematics through the design cycle :)

If you wanted to get really fancy you could save the eco.txt files after
each netlist import and extract the number of adds/deletes for each
revision. This would give you a better idea on how much time is wast..
er.. expended doing, then redoing, then going back and re-redoing
things.

The data we track is Total Symbols, Mirrored Symbols, Total Pins, NC
Pins, EIC, Area, Overall Dimensions, Density, panelized/Single, number
of boards per panel, Material, Plating, RoHS compliance, Number of Nets,
Etch Length, Total Vias, Vias per Connection, Total Layers/Plane Layers,
Total Design Hours, Hours for each designer (for multiple-designer
projects), Total Days on Hold, Schematic Revisions, Parts Added, Parts
Deleted, Estimated Annual Usage, Engineer Comments, Designer Comments,
and Phase of the Moon. With all these data, we can always point to
something that has improved, and correctly point to the real cause if
something else has diminished.

FWIW, I also have automation that keeps an Access database full of this
data, so we can extract charts and reports "with circles and arrows and
a paragraph on the back explainin' what each one is" (apologies to Arlo
Guthrie.)

Subject: [DC] Productivity Indicators

Hello Everyone-

To satisfy an upper-management directive, we (global PCB layout group)
must find a way to measure our productivity, so as to be able to prove
we're improving.

There are so many things that go into estimating a job... but at the
moment I'm thinking that for input data, tracking Number of Layers,
Total
Connections, Pin Density, Total Hours, and Percent Carryover might be a
good start for new jobs. I don't even have an idea of what to do for
changes, as yet.

A colleague thought there might be something documented in an IPC
standard
somewhere that addresses ways to calculate job complexity, etc. I
haven't
located it yet. If you know of this, know of other reference material
for
this sort of thing, or just want to tell me what I ought to do. I'd
appreciate it (I think...).

All the Best,
-Chris
