Hi Rich,

For additional 4/15 reading, check out these links.....

For a previous employer, I set up long term storage with a product called Intercept....I'll let you know in 2010 how well it worked.

Hi, Richard.
They did. Several in fact. Now this is a dry subject, heh, heh, so
perhaps you want to take this home and read it some night when you can't
get to sleep, like on April 15th.
There were many older standards for long term storage of electrical
assemblies, particularly for ships and submarines, where it was
important that the radio, telecomm, navigation electronics and other
electronic gear be stored properly to protect against moisture and salt
atmospheres and handling in a military environment. Over time, these
evolved into specs such as MIL-E-17555H, GEIA- STD-0003, and other
pre-cursors of today's J-STD-033.
The J-STD-033, while it is more of a standard for MSD handling of
components, can be used in conjunction with a hard packaging requirement
to provide a spec for long-term storage.
I don't know if there is a single standard anymore that encompasses
environmental control, hard packaging, and ESD control just for
long-term storage.
But if you are only concerned with protection against moisture,
environment, and ESD, the J-STD-033 alone will do.

What is the essential difference between a silicon chip, a BGA, a hybrid
MCM, and a 45" by 45" umpteen layer computer board? Wouldn't J-STD-033
cover all of these? For long-term storage, they should all be stored in
a hermetically sealed Faraday cage, evacuated, with dessicant, in a
proper protective container.

Military has a spec for everything. I would of thought that they had
one for this also.

Thanks.

Hi Richard:
I do not know about a spec. From experience, each board should
be individually package in a conductive bag ( inside and outside ), then
placed in a protective bag ( pink bubble wrap bag ), finally placed in
slotted conductive box. Preferably stored in an air conditioned storage.
Some military groups have special boxes for long term storage of
expensive equipment that are water proof.
Regards,
Ramon

Can anyone give me their thoughts on the storage of completed & properly
packaged assemblies? What would be considered long term versus short
term storage?

I would image that the military must have some type of specification on
the storage of finished assemblies.

Anyone have clue as to what that spec. # might be?
