Subject: [SMART] The 5th International Conference on Design and Manufacture
for Sustainable Development

The 5th International Conference on Design and Manufacture for Sustainable
Development will be held at Loughborough University on 10-11th July 2007

The conference has been co-sponsored by the Europe-China co-operation in
Green Electronics Production Research (EC-GEPRO) project. The objective of
this European funded program is to establish improved research collaboration
between China and Europe in the area of green electronics. We therefore
particularly encourage papers to stimulate high-level debate on the
development of green electronic products and production processes.

The conference provides a forum for the dissemination of current research on
the following themes:

. Engineering design for sustainable development

. Methods and tools for sustainable design

. Consumer perceptions of sustainable design
.
. Environmentally benign/conscious manufacture

. Dematerialisation and product service systems

. Energy conservation and low-carbon manufacturing

. Waste minimisation and product end-of-life management

. Sustainable supply chain management and reverse logistics

. Life-cycle engineering of products

. Local and national government initiatives and enabling
technologies

. Sustainability education for the next generation of engineers

The conference aims to focus on the exchange of the latest ideas and
stimulate technical and scientific discussions on sustainable development
and the implications for manufacturing industry. We are inviting people from
academia and industry to submit papers on their recent research on problems
related to reducing the environmental impacts of both manufacturing
processes and products.

Workshops

It is intended to organise two workshops that are aimed at those working in
industry who have a particular interest in, or responsibility for,
sustainability issues. The workshops will be held on the 2nd day of the
conference (Wednesday 11th July 2007).

Abstract & Paper Submission

Authors are invited to submit a 200-300 word abstract reporting research
motivations, methods and results. Authors of accepted abstracts will be
invited to submit full manuscripts for publication in the conference CD
proceedings. All manuscripts will be refereed by the International
Scientific Committee and accepted papers will be published in the conference
CD Proceedings. A number of selected papers will be considered for
publication in a book based on the conference manuscripts. Guidelines for
preparing abstracts and manuscripts are available at the conference
web-site:
http://www.lboro.ac.uk/sustain07

Best Paper Awards

The awards for best paper are sponsored by the Royal Academy of Engineering.
The best papers, including at least one student paper, will be awarded
prizes as recommended by a jury. All students who wish their paper to be
considered in the competition are requested to submit their paper with the
designation: "For Student Paper Prize" at the time of their submission.

Registration and Accommodation

The forms required for conference registration, and details of accommodation
are available on the conference website:
