Recycling in itself is not a problem, Joe. It is the cost of recycling.
Mandating the recycling as a result of RoHS and IEEE directives creates
the need to recycle millions of CRT TVs and monitors. Because this cost
is being passed on to the consumers, of which most either cannot afford
or will not pay, guess where this stuff ends up? Read all about it in
today's St. Paul Pioneer Press:

Sounds like recycling is not a large problem from what has been stated
and what I have read.

So here are some thoughts on making lemonade.

Lead crystal is still popular for decorative items.

Some clever fold might eventually decide to get some of their raw
materials from a landfill. Then their marketing folks will be able to
claim a higher moral ground for their recycled material based products.

Leaded glass may also be useful if/when nuclear energy becomes popular
again for waste storage.

As for the phosphor toxicity issue presented by Brian, it is an
interesting point. I could not, in a quick search, identity which ones
are the risky ones but I am not one to bet against him.

That said, there are a number of phosphors that occur in nature (e.g.
some algae phosphoresce) and there are still lots of phosphorescent
glow in the dark toys on the market.
