Pratap,
First, it is not 50% for, 50% against—you are actually the only person I know
[outside of Brussels], that seems to be for the Pb-ban part of RoHS.
Second, to compare the forced switch to LF-solders to the change from PTH to
SMT totally misses the mark. Let me give you an analogy.
The switch from PTH to SMT was like the switch from solid rubber wheels for
cars to pneumatic ones. Sure it dislodged some jobs and required quitea bit of
engineering effort, but because of the gains in comfort, speed and fuel
economy it was self-perpetuating not forced down everybodies throat.
Now, the forced Pb-ban part of RoHS is like some religious dictator decreeing
that the circle is a holy symbol, and therefore wheels running through all
this dirt could no longer be circular. There may well be an engineering solution
around this decree, but it is to nobodies benefit and it is devoid of any
logic or real need.
